Some places are meant to be discovered. Discretion Underground is one of them.
Tucked away in Downtown Newton at 118 North College Ave., this hidden speakeasy offers a true step back into the Prohibition era. There’s no flashy sign out front to guide you in. Instead, guests start by finding the discreet green door along the side street. Step inside, walk down the hallway, and you’ll come to a second door. Knock there, say the code word, and the experience begins.

Beyond that door, the space opens into an intimate underground lounge with dim lighting, vintage-inspired details, and a moody atmosphere that sets the tone for the night. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, sip something special, and enjoy a night that feels a little different from your typical evening out.
Discretion Underground is owned by Jeff and Laurie Roberts, a husband-and-wife duo who wanted to bring something new and different to the area. Laurie had always loved visiting speakeasies while traveling, and when the right space became available in Newton, she and Jeff knew it was the perfect opportunity to create one of their own. With the help of supportive friends and plenty of hard work, their idea quickly came to life. This March, the speakeasy celebrated its one-year anniversary, marking a full year of welcoming guests and creating memorable nights.
Of course, a speakeasy is nothing without great drinks, and Discretion Underground has plenty to choose from. Their cocktail menu mixes familiar classics with a few creative surprises. Their two best-sellers during the first year have been the Espresso Martini and the Classic Old Fashioned, two drinks that keep guests coming back for another round.

Looking to try something different? The Banana Bread Old Fashioned adds a fun twist with bourbon, banana liqueur, brown sugar syrup, black walnut bitters, and chocolate bitters. Another standout is the Desert Flower, made with reposado tequila, mezcal, lemon juice, hibiscus syrup, and St. Germain. Wine lovers will also find selections from Dynamis Estate Wines. While the speakeasy is strictly 21 and over, the menu includes non-alcoholic options so everyone can enjoy something thoughtfully crafted.

Part of the intrigue is that Discretion Underground operates as a membership-based speakeasy, offering both annual and lifetime memberships for those who want to make it a regular stop. But first-time visitors are always welcome to see what it’s all about. Simply knock on the second door and use the code word “Swordfish.” Let them know Visit Hickory sent you, and you’ll be welcomed in as a guest to experience the speakeasy for yourself.
Discretion Underground also opens its doors to the public for select community events throughout the year. You may catch them participating in local favorites like the Roper Romp, as well as Newton’s First Friday ART Hop, a monthly downtown event held on the first Friday of each month that brings art, music, and activity to the streets.
And if you find yourself craving a bite while sipping your cocktail, there’s one more insider perk. Geppeto’s Pizza next door delivers directly into the speakeasy, so you can enjoy pizza and craft cocktails without ever leaving your seat.
So next time you’re exploring Newton, keep an eye out for the green door, follow the hallway, and say the word. Some secrets are simply too good not to share.
