Every October, Hart Square Village—the largest collection of historic log structures in the U.S.—opens its gates for the Annual Heritage Festival. For one day only, all 103 cabins, barns, and workshops come to life with the sights, sounds, and smells of pioneer-era traditions.
More than 300 artisans and demonstrators fill the grounds, bringing old-school skills to life right in front of you. Blacksmiths fire up the forge, weavers work the loom, broom makers shape handles by hand, and fresh apple butter bubbles over open flames (yes, you’ll want to bring home a jar). It’s a step back in time without leaving the 21st century.

This isn’t history behind glass. It’s under your feet, in your hands, and filling the air with wood smoke, live Appalachian music, and craftsmanship passed down through generations. You’ll wander through preserved log cabins, meet makers eager to share the stories behind their craft, and discover new tales around every corner.
Whether you’re a history buff, festival lover, or just looking for a great fall day out, this is the one time each year Hart Square comes fully to life. It’s a celebration of craft, culture, and connection set against a backdrop of North Carolina’s best fall colors.
It happens once a year, right when the leaves are at their best—so mark your calendar and make a weekend of it. Book your stay, bring your crew, and get ready for a day packed with stories, skills, and plenty of reasons to come back next year.
📍 Pro tip: This is one of the region's most beloved one-day festivals. When tickets drop, grab yours early.
