HICKORY, NC — Visit Hickory is proud to join destinations across the country in celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), May 3–9, 2026, recognizing the travel industry’s essential role in driving economic growth, supporting local businesses, and enhancing quality of life in communities nationwide.

This year’s celebration comes at a pivotal moment for the United States, as the nation prepares to welcome millions of visitors for globally significant events, including the FIFA World Cup and America’s 250th anniversary. Established in 1983, NTTW highlights how travel fuels connection, strengthens communities, and powers the American economy.

The 2026 theme, “Postmarked: Essential,” underscores the critical role travel plays in every corner of the country—including right here in Hickory and Catawba County.

Tourism continues to be a major economic driver locally. In 2024, visitors spent $351 million in Catawba County, supporting more than 2,500 jobs and generating over $88 million in payroll. Tourism also produced more than $12 million in state and local taxes, saving each Catawba County resident approximately $157.06 annually.

“The energy and growth we’re seeing in Hickory are fueled in large part by our thriving tourism industry,” said Mandy Hildebrand, President & CEO of Visit Hickory. “National Travel and Tourism Week gives us the opportunity to celebrate not only the economic impact of travel, but also the people and experiences that make Hickory a destination worth discovering.”

In recognition of the industry’s importance, the Cities of Conover and Hickory will officially proclaim May 3–9, 2026, as National Travel and Tourism Week at the Conover City Council meeting on Monday, May 4th, and at the Hickory City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 5th.

Community-Focused Activations Throughout the Week

To bring the celebration directly to the community, Visit Hickory will host a series of pop-up visitor engagement experiences throughout the week. These activations are designed to meet residents and visitors where they are—encouraging exploration, sharing local pride, and highlighting all that Hickory has to offer.

Pop-up locations and events include:

These pop-ups will feature visitor information, local highlights, and interactive opportunities to connect with the Visit Hickory team, while discovering new experiences across the destination.

“Tourism is not just about attracting visitors—it’s about creating a sense of place and pride for those who live here,” said Mayor Hank Guess. “We are proud to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week and recognize the many individuals and businesses who contribute to making Hickory and Catawba County a vibrant and welcoming community.”

Throughout the week, Visit Hickory will also spotlight local partners, attractions, and hospitality professionals across its digital platforms, showcasing the diverse experiences that define the destination—from arts and culture to outdoor recreation, sports, and culinary offerings.

Residents are encouraged to participate by supporting local businesses, attending community events, and thanking those who work in the tourism and hospitality industry.
